A teenager by the identity name of Charlie, begins to write letters to an unidentified friend.Charlie has a brother, who received a full ride scholarship to play football and Penn State. He also has an older sister who is beautiful and enjoys experimenting with boys, one in particular. His father is a tough man who expresses tough love; they don’t have the best relationship, but its good enough. His mother is an emotional woman who loves her family, and had a difficult and challenging childhood. Charlie refers to his family members continuously through his letters. He does not want the person he is writing to, to know his true identity, or the identity of his friends, so he warns his friend in his first letter that he will call people by different names or generic names. He does this because he “does not want to be found.”Charlie is a teenager in the early 1990’s and writes continuous letters to his friend about his experiences.
Charlie begins by sharing the horrific experience of his closest friend Michael, and his suicide.He tells the happening truth, and only talks about the situation for a few paragraphs throughout his letter.Charlie also describes his Aunt Helen and how she was his favorite person in the world.Unfortunately, she passes away a few years later. He writes about his family watching his brother play football, and also them watching M.A.S.H. , and how he sees his father shed a tear in the last few moments.Charlie also loves to read and his English teacher Bill, gives him book after book, and in a way teaching his challenging concepts separately from the class.

While already enduring his disconcerting thoughts, he witnesses her sister’s boyfriend, physically abuse her.Charlie then has a talk with his English teacher, who unquestionably called his parents ant shared the information.His father then talked to the boy and his parents. However, no one in the family knows what exactly happened in that situation.The situation was brought up only once more. Charlie and his family were traveling to Ohio when his brother became inflamed and let it slip. His parents just stared and them both; they didn’t say a word, they didn’t have to. Meanwhile, Charlie’s friendships with Sam and Patrick continue to grow. After a football game, Sam and Patrick are headed to a party and asked Charlie is he would like to accompany them.Charlie then remembers back to when his brother had a party; he witnessed a young couple having some fun but the male was getting too rough. He witnessed a rape and that same party was also busted by the police. At that point, he didn’t really understand how he felt about parties.All three of them go to the party, and it was chill.There were people just sitting around drinking and smoking, and this was Charlie’s first night experimenting with a narcotic.After he gets high off of marijuana, he describes it as, “And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.”That same night, Charlie also discovered his good friend Patrick, was homosexual.The man Patrick is interested in is named Brad.Brad is a jock and may be ashamed of the type of gender he is interested in, but Patrick loves Brad, and just wants him to openly love him back.However Charlie didn’t care. He knew and kept many secrets, like a wallflower.His sister is now back with her boyfriend who had hit her, which he also keeps a secret. Charlie has admitted he loves Sam.
